Skoda’s shock coupe revealed

Skoda will launch a stunning three-door dubbed the ‘Joyster’ – the new car sits on the VW Golf platform, with Scirocco engines under the bonnet.

From Yeti to sporty, Skoda is expanding again! Auto Express has unearthed plans for the firm to produce a three-door Scirocco-rivalling coupé called the Joyster.

The Golf-based newcomer will provide a low-cost alternative to Volkswagen’s sporty coupé, and could be coming sooner than you think. An insider confirmed the Joyster name, along with an expected launch towards the end of this year, and our images reveal how the new car could look.

Many of the design cues are from the original Joyster concept (right), which debuted at 2006’s Paris Motor Show – although this car was supermini-sized. These touches include blacked-out A-pillars, giving the illusion of a large, wraparound windscreen.

The Joyster’s sporty profile is reminiscent of its Scirocco cousin, and the rising waistline and sharply angled C-pillars complete a stylish design. At the rear, bold tail-lights run the width of the bootlid. Skoda’s design has evolved since the concept debuted, and the new car will get an updated family face to allow it to fit into the range.

That means the headlamps are now more shapely and a set of LED daytime running lights has been incorporated into the grille. Expect the engine line-up to mimic the Scirocco’s – so it will include 1.4-litre petrol turbos in 121bhp and 158bhp guises.

The diesel range will consist of 2.0-litre TDIs putting out 138bhp and 168bhp. Gearbox options will be either a six-speed manual or a seven-ratio DSG. A vRS model, similar to the car seen here, could follow in 2012, powered by a 2.0-litre petrol turbo. This is likely to deliver around 210bhp, and be able to cover 0-62mph in six seconds and go on to 155mph.

When it hits the road later this year, the Joyster will cost around £16,000 – undercutting the Scirocco by £3,000.

2012 Skoda Joyster

Badged after a concept introduced back in 2006, the 2012 Skoda Joyster is on its way, as it has been approved by the Czech manufacturer. According to the Germans at Auto Bild, the vehicle, which is expected to be the cheapest Skoda model in the lineup, will be based on the Volkswagen Up!

The model, scheduled for launch in the first half of 2012 for under EUR 9,000, will most likely compete against the Toyota iQ and Peugeot 107.

As it is thought as a solution to current urban mobility problems, the 2012 Joyster will use a front engine, front wheel drive setup. Though powertrain details are yet to be confirmed, it is thought the new entry-level Skoda model will be offered in a choice of two engine variants, namely a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol and a 1.2 three-cylinder diesel.

In terms of CO2 emissions, the 2012 Skoda Joyster is also expected to come with an under 80g/km output for the diesel and less than 100g/km for the petrol.

Late last week, German manufacturer Volkswagen was also announcing the revival of the Lupo name with a new small car based on the same Up! The new Lupo, which will become the new entry level vehicle in the German carmaker’s range, will enter the market in spring 2012, alongside Skoda’s Joyster.

There is no word on an electric Joyster so far, so we’ll have to settle with an electric version of the Lupo only, which could be based on the E-Up concept.

Skoda Auto’s new concept car – the Skoda Joyster – is having a world premiere at the Paris International Motor Show. Shaped very dynamically, this leisure-time three-door front-wheel-drive compact vehicle is mainly targeted at young people. On top of its fresh-looking design, the vehicle offers a high degree of comfort and smart modern communication solutions. The Joyster concept demonstrates the big creative potential of the company’s young designers led by Jens Manske. The team indeed creates new, simple and sophisticated solutions in the spirit of the company’s advertising slogan “Simply Clever”.

Besides the Joyster concept car, a further three items of Skoda Auto’s product portfolio are having world premieres at the event:

Based on the Octavia Combi 4×4, the Octavia Scout is going to reinforce the manufacturer’s position in the four-wheel-drive and leisure-time segments and significantly extend the brand’s model portfolio at the same time. With increased clear height, the four-wheel-drive system and two powerful engines 2.0 TDI PD/103 kW (140 HP) and 2.0 FSI/110 kW (150 HP), the model is another addition to the Octavia range.

Other attractive items to be exhibited by Skoda Auto at the Paris Motor Show include the Roomster, new top-class equipment levels Laurin & Klement for the Octavia and the Superb, as well as a new edition of the Octavia RS (sports version of the Octavia) with the powerful turbo diesel engine 2.0 TDI PD.

The demand for Skoda vehicles is growing. From January until June 2006, Skoda Auto’s car sales grew by 12.4 compared to the same period of 2005. Specified in terms of the respective model lines, the number of customers buying the Octavia grew by 21.4 %, the sales of the Superb grew by 2.6 % and the sales of the Fabia by 4.2 %. Over 275,000 Skoda vehicles were sold over the said period.

Skoda Auto is planning to sell 530,000 vehicles over 2006, i.e., break the existing record. The brand is going to get over 500 thousand vehicles produced within one year for the very first time in its history. The new models offered by Skoda, i.e., the Octavia Scout, the Octavia RS 2.0 TDI PD/125 kW and the Roomster, are going to help significantly in the company’s efforts aimed at meeting the target.

Skoda Auto currently employs 26,000 people and manufactures vehicles in five countries: the Czech Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, India, Kazakhstan and the Ukraine. In 2007 Skoda Auto is going to start manufacturing cars also in its new production plant in China. Skoda vehicles are sold in altogether 90 countries.
